Neighborhood Watch Through combined efforts, our Neighborhood Watch and patrol groups are effective crime prevention forces. While vehicle patrols cover greater distances in less time, block watchers can identify localized problems more accurately. We hope some of our ideas will help others realize they don't have to tolerate crime. |

| Crime Prevention At the request of owners, officers visit homes and businesses conducting Crime Prevention checks. Owners are then advised of changes that can be used to deter crime. Proactive vs. Reactive In addition to providing Crime Prevention Checks, the police department also provides information to the citizens of Hartsville, that some of the surest ways to reduce crime in their area is to focus on the factors that put them as individuals at risk -- factors like family violence, peer association, school problems, and/or drug and alcohol abuse. The information provided aims to help reduce crime and victimization by tackling crime before it happens. |
National Night Out Program For the past 5 years The Hartsville Police Department has participated in the annual "National Night Out" program. This program is held on the first Tuesday in August. It has been extraordinarily successful in promoting involvement in crime and drug prevention activities, strengthening police-community relations, and encouraging neighborhood camaraderie as part of the fight for safer streets. According to the National Association of Town Watch, ”Since 1984, National Night Out—America's Night Out Against Crime has grown to involve over 30 million people from more than 9,000 communities”. Hartsville is only one of 56 police departments in South Carolina that continually takes an active role in this national event. |
