Bernice L. Wilson is a native of Hartsville. A 1954 graduate of Butler High School, he is retired from Sonoco Products Company after 31 years of service, yet is currently employed at Sonoco in the mail center. Mr. Wilson served on the Darlington County Board of Registration and Election Commission, the Hartsville Planning and Zoning Committee, the Hartsville Design Review board, and the Board of Directors of the Sonoco Old timer’s Club. He was instrumental in the development of the Hartsville Community Policing Program and established a Neighborhood Crime Watch Zone for his residential area. He played an active role in the organization of the Butler Heritage Foundation in the late 1980s and worked extensively with the Hartsville Branch of the NAACP. Bernice is married to the former Mary Alice Montgomery Wilson and they are proud parents of six daughters, five sons, plus nineteen grandchildren. His family was honored as South Carolina’s Black Family of the Year in 1989 during an event sponsored by the University of South Carolina and the Columbia Urban League, Inc. He is an active member of Jerusalem Baptist Church where he serves on the Deacon Board and Senior Choir. He is also a member of the Mr. Rona Masonic Lodge #348. Councilmember Bernice L. Wilson was elected to serve on the Hartsville City Council in November of 2007.
